If your home is cluttered, you’d want to at least create one space where you can have a moment of calm. The KonMari method always starts with tidying your clothes, and so the bedroom is the best place to start since usually that’s where most of the clothing mess lives. And it’s where you want to be most relaxed and peaceful. Once you tidy the clothes packed in the closet, on the floor, the chair, piling up on a dresser, on the bed, you will notice how much lighter it feels in the room. You may want to consider removing the chair where things tend to pile up, or maybe you want to try reducing the number of electronics in the room. Here’s another transformation of a drawer full of containers and packages in various sizes that was simply rearranged. Nothing was eliminated because the homeowner was not present to work with me. However, it’s a great example of only using a few dividers and relying on the shapes or color to help get the drawer organized. . . Always start by taking everything out, and as you do that, sort items by subcategories (sauces, seasoning, canned food etc.) . . Boxes make great dividers, and creating boundaries will help your things stay organized. . . I like to pop the flaps of the box for the tea so you can easily access the tea bags. I did put a few different flavors into the same box, but the packing is usually enough to help you see the separation between flavors. . . Line up items from tall to short for better visibility. . . Defined as “an unpleasant but necessary task”, many people blame their clutter on not liking to do chores. But maybe you just never learned the most efficient way to do chores, or how by being mindful of the present moment it’s easier to remember to put things back after you are done. . . Divide and conquer: Over the years I’ve taught my kids, now 6 and 11, to help out around the house. It’s like the way I grew up and went to school in Taiwan, where all the students from first grade will help clean the classrooms and bathrooms twice a day. It takes consistency and a lot of coaching and team effort, but focusing on every family member contributing time and efforts and taking responsibilities for themselves, will be worth it in the long run. . . . Change your perspective: If you don’t have time to go to the gym, then put on some music and use a bit extra strength when moping and scrubbing the tub. Or while the laundry is going, do some yoga and meditate to the sound of running water and rhythmic tumbling. There are times when organizing systems can actually complicate your life. Having too many subcategories or individualized colors and sizes will make certain systems harder to maintain. . . If you find yourself taking too much time to put certain paperwork by the subject or date, pay attention to how you use the file and try re-shuffle them to be kept by month or whether you need to keep the paper at all if it’s searchable online. . . . Kids stuff definitely needs to be kept simple enough that your children can put away their own toys. I often recommend using a hamper with wheels and make it a game to pick up as you go. If your Legos are out of control and you’re tired of sorting them, then stop sorting. There are products such as a Lay-n-Go draw string bag that can hold all the pieces inside the circular mat when not playing. . . . Trust your gut that if a system makes you feel frustrated, then abandon the plan and try something else. Simple Joy Tip: Is the morning a hectic time for your family? On Sundays, I like to pre-make these chocolate chip mini pancakes for the week. 🥞🥞🥞 I use Bob's Red Mill Organic Pancake Waffle Mix High Fiber with no added sugar. By using the mini chocolate chips, they make these look like cookies. But the purpose is to minimize messy syrup or too much sugar in the morning. You can also let the kids pick their own topping to personalize their pancakes. . . The non-stick mini pancake pan allows me to bake them in the oven, set the timer, then do other things in the kitchen while I wait. . . Make enough to last a few days for the family, and keep them in a freezer bag. When we get so busy sometimes that we end up skipping meals then over eating, or make poor food choices because we just need something fast and comforting. (Stress makes us crave fatty and sugary foods.) The best way to avoid this from happening is to prepare simple meals that are nutritious and easy to make. . . . Overnight oats, avocado on whole grain toast, or even just a banana are breakfast foods that can be ready in less than 5 minutes of preparation. . . . Hearty soups, green smoothies, and wraps with chopped up leftovers with some black beans and little bit of cheese cooked in the pan until the tortilla is slightly crispy makes a filling and flavorful lunch or dinner. . . . Think about what you can make ahead of time and freeze. I pre-make a big batch of waffles loaded with pumpkin puree and chia seeds for the kids. Also I mix chopped and sautéed mushroom, onions, cauliflower with my ground beef to make patties and meatballs that’ll work for several meals. . . . Prepare fresh fruits, veggies, and nuts to snack on instead of processed chips and crackers. . . Clothing is the first category of the method because these are items that we interact with the most on a daily basis. When you have a drawer with only the items you love and feel good using, it can set the tone for the rest of your day. . . Note that this is not decluttering by the room or space.
